Young Adults Aged 18 to 25

  • In 2010, the rate of current illicit drug use was higher among young adults aged 18 to 25 (21.5Êpercent) than among youths aged 12 to 17 (10.1Êpercent) and adults aged 26 or older (6.6Êpercent). Among young adults, the rates were 18.5Êpercent for marijuana, 5.9Êpercent for nonmedical use of psychotherapeutic drugs, 2.0Êpercent for hallucinogens, and 1.5Êpercent for cocaine (FigureÊ2.7).

  • The rate of current illicit drug use among young adults aged 18 to 25 increased from 19.6Êpercent in 2008 to 21.2Êpercent in 2009 and 21.5Êpercent in 2010, driven largely by an increase in marijuana use (from 16.5Êpercent in 2008 to 18.1Êpercent in 2009 and 18.5Êpercent in 2010).
  • Among young adults aged 18 to 25, the rate of current nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs in 2010 was 5.9Êpercent, similar to the rate in the years from 2002 to 2009.
  • Current use of cocaine among young adults aged 18 to 25 decreased from 2002 to 2010 (2.0 to 1.5Êpercent). From 2002 to 2010, the rate of methamphetamine use among young adults also declined from 0.6Êpercent (2002 and 2003) to 0.2Êpercent (2008 through 2010).
